Volkswagen Group and Polestar choose Tesla charging connector

From 2025, Tesla’s North American charging standard (or NACS) connector will be available at all new and existing charging stations together with CCS connectors. Volkswagen did this to “support car manufacturers to add NACS charging ports at the same time”, because several car manufacturers announced in recent weeks that they will provide Tesla charging technology for their electric vehicles in the future.
Robert Barrosa, president and CEO of Electrify America, said: “Since its inception, we have been focusing on building an inclusive and open ultra-fast charging network to promote the popularity of electric vehicles.” “We look forward to continuing to support industry-wide standards to improve vehicle interoperability and simplify public charging.”
That’s not all. It is said that the parent company Volkswagen is also negotiating with Tesla to provide Tesla’s charging design for its electric vehicles in the United States. Volkswagen told Reuters: “Volkswagen Group and its brands are currently evaluating the implementation of the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its North American customers.”
Although Volkswagen is still weighing the option to avoid losing American customers, Polestar confirmed this move. The Volvo subsidiary will “defaultly equipped with NACS charging ports” for all new cars. In addition, the car manufacturer will release NACS adapters from mid-2024 to allow its drivers to access Tesla’s super charging network. The car manufacturer said: “In the future, Polestar vehicles equipped with NACS will be equipped with CCS adapters to maintain compatibility with the existing CCS public fast charging infrastructure in North America.”
This is not surprising, because the parent company Volvo announced that it will also provide cars equipped with NACS plugs for its cars from 2025. Car manufacturers Ford, General Motors and Rivian have recently reached similar agreements.
Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, said: “We pay tribute to Tesla’s pioneering work to accelerate the adoption and popularization of electric vehicles, and we are glad to see the super charging network put into use in this way.
